TREK ORGANIZER
Rotary Everest Trek 2012 is being organized by Karl Herzog and other Rotarians as a way to help Sherpa students in the Solu-Khumbu region of Nepal. Trekkers will raise funds for the Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation (SEHF) to help build a high school that accomodates 130 students. The Zeke O’Connor School will offer the only Grades 8-12 curriculum in the region that includes science studies.
The goal is to take 48 participants organized into two groups. Interested trekkers can register on the event website at www.rotaryeveresttrek.com. Detailed travel itineraries for the two groups are also provided along with costs.

EXPERIENCED ALPINE CLIMBER
Herzog just returned from France where he and his brother participated in the La Marmotte Bicycle race which is 174 K with a 5,000 M height gain and through four mountain passes. The LaMarmotte event was followed by an ascent to the peak Mt. Blanc. Karl is an established climber who has reached the peaks of Mount Athabasca, Mt. Rainier, and others.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Karl has dedicated his life to human service. In 1985 he co-founded MOTIVE-ACTION, a unique not-for-profit organization. The idea came to Karl and his brother after observing young people who wanted to work in the automotive industry but couldn’t get or keep a job due to various “people” related issues. All they needed was a little help.

MOTIVE-ACTION provides auto repair, auto body, and heavy-duty mechanical training for youth and new Canadians facing barriers to meaningful employment. In addition to basic work-place skill training, clients receive essential skill upgrading in relevant academic and interpersonal areas www.motiveaction.com.

ROTARY SERVICE
In 2001 Karl was nominated for a Calgary South Rotary Club Integrity Award due to his work with MOTIVE-ACTION. The experience peaked his interest in Rotary and he joined the Calgary West Rotary Club. Karl served as chair of various club and District 5360 committees. He served as a club director and as President from 2009-2010.
THE POWER OF CHANGE
Karl is committed to equipping students to be productive citizens. At Motive-Action, being productive means more than just doing your job well. It also means caring about what you do and understanding the relationship between each individual and their job, employer, personal life, family, and community. In Napal, Karl believes the same ideals will be shared with Sherpa Students through working with the Sir Edmond Hillary Foundation to build and expand the Zeke O’Connor School.
